Michigan animal shelters are supposed to be regulated by the Michigan Department of Agriculture. Unfortunately, the MDA basically refuses to perform its statutory duties, causing needless suffering to thousands of animals annually. This section is our attempt to categorize Michigan Animal Shelters in some meaningful way. The categories are based on the 2007 Annual Shelter Report unless otherwise noted.
Hall of Shame Shelters.
The shelters in the Michigan Hall of Shame show little success at adoptions. Shelters with a combination (cats and dogs) adoption rate of 20% or less are in the hall of shame. Shelters that gas or sell to research earn an automatic trip to the Hall of Shame and are noted by R for sells to research or G for kills animals by gas. The shelters are linked to profiles and any article about the individual shelter.
