Six Lakes Cruelty Case Dogs Sold to Research

In early March 2008 a horrific case of animal cruelty was uncovered in Montcalm County. Authorities found dead sheep, dogs and pigs at a Six Lakes Michigan home. Four starving dogs removed from the home were transported to the Montcalm County Animal Shelter. The authorities only acted to remove the starving and dying animals after neighbors, tired of complaining to Montcalm County Animal Control, contacted a local television station.
Of Friday, May 9, 2008, prosecutors filed misdemeanor animal cruelty charges against the two property owners on Friday, May 9, 2008. A local television station reported the good news that all four dogs were adopted. Sadly, the television station is reporting the wrong information. Only one of the dogs is currently living in a home with humans. One dog was euthanized because he was supposedly to ill to be saved. According to records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act Request, two of the dogs were sold to USDA Class B Research Dealer, Jim Woudenberg in early April.
Local activist Jeanne Urbanski believes that “it is a shame that these poor dogs went from an abusive and neglectful home only to be sold to research”. Another activist, wishing to remain anonymous, questioned whether the citizens of Montcalm County are compassionate after wondering why the dogs were not adopted by a caring family. “I cannot think of a county where neglected and abused animals are not adopted by caring members of the public. Usually, there is a waiting list of families wishing to adopt animals like these dogs. What is wrong with people there, why couldn’t they help those dogs?” the activist lamented.
If Montcalm County citizens care at all about animals, they will raise holy hell with their commissioners. Demand to find out if these dogs are still alive, if they are, demand that they be brought back so a good rescue or family can give these poor souls the love they have been denied. If they are at a research institution, demand that R & R Research reveal where they are. We must not allow animals subjected to such cruelty meet such a hideous fate.
