Berrien County Animal Control Enters michanimalnews.com Hall of Shame

If you were a dog or cat, you would not want end up at the Berrien County Animal Shelter in Berrien Center Michigan.  The odds are bad that you would leave alive.  In fact, only 11% of the animals that enter the shelter actually are adopted by a new family.  The rest are exterminated in a carbon monoxide chamber.  In 2007, the rest equaled 3049 dogs and cats, family pets that were gassed.

Obviously, Berrien County Animal Control is a dismal failure which is the expected outcome when little effort is expended to actually save animals lives.  Berrien County Animal Control does not list animals available for adoption on the internet.  The shelter does not work with rescue groups.  In fact, there is no evidence that Berrien County Animal Control does anything except house pets for a few days before they are gassed.

Berrien County Animal Shelter's pathetic adoption program earned it a spot in the Michigan Animal News Shelter Hall of Shame.  Any shelter that gasses 76% of the animals unlucky enough to come through the doors should be ashamed of the job they are doing.  Berrien County's citizens deserve a shelter that they can be proud of and that they can support.

To make a difference for Berrien County animals, contact the Berrien County Board of Commissioners.  The Board of Commissioners is divided into committees.  The Administration Committee oversees the animal control department.  The Administration Committee meets every Thursday at 8:30 am in the Berrien County Administration Center, 701 Main St., St. Joseph Michigan.  Members of the Administration Committee are:

    Jeanette Leahy - Chairperson
    Andrew Vavra - Vice Chairperson
    Donald Gast
    Larry Clymer

The full Board of Commissioners meets every Thursday, immediately following the committee meetings.
